Join bluebird bio’s growing European team as Patient Advocacy & Policy Manager, Europe, to bring the promise of gene therapy to patients with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD).  Europe is bluebird’s first launch market and we are seeking collaborative, creative and passionate individuals to help bring bluebird’s gene therapies to patients in Europe.  

Reporting to the Associate Director of Patient Advocacy for Thalassemia and SCD and the European Head of Public Affairs, you are responsible for engaging and managing relationships with key patient-, civil society-, and community-based groups and policy leaders in SCD in Europe, with a particular focus on the UK and France, but also Germany and the rest of Europe. You will act as the bridge between bluebird bio and the SCD policy, patient and carer community, as well as with other critical stakeholders, across Europe and in key geographies.

About the Role:

  • Support the development of patient advocacy and policy strategies and initiatives in SCD (pan-European and in-country), in close collaboration with the Global Patient Advocacy and European Public Affairs team
  • Assess the patient advocacy landscape in SCD in Europe and determine opportunities for developing and nurturing strong relationships and meaningful collaborations, including public policy initiatives
  • Engage, effectively communicate with, and manage relations with pan-European and national advocacy organisations and policy ‘champions’ in SCD. Build a sense of community and collaboration among these groups and with bluebird bio
  • Identify, support and advance awareness-raising, capacity-building, and advocacy initiatives in SCD
  • Initiate meetings and manage the communication with patient groups, key influencers and SCD policy champions and co-lead the collection of sickle cell patient and family insights in Europe to inform bluebird decision making and SCD strategic and tactical initiatives
  • Foster strong partnerships with Global Patient Advocacy, Government Affairs & Public Policy, Medical Affairs, Patient Operations, and all relevant functions to ensure alignment, identify synergies and determine opportunities/need for advocacy engagement
  • Participate and present on key SCD developments and initiatives in key internal meetings and events and contribute new ideas and approaches in support of the LentiGlobin programme
  • Act as a point of contact for incoming enquiries from patient groups and other stakeholders, providing compliant guidance and support as required, and channel information appropriately to bluebird bio
  • Participate in industry patient think tank and advisory meetings and key external events

About You:

  • BA/MA degree or equivalent in health policy, political sciences, communications, or other related degree
  • 6 years’ experience in public policy and patient advocacy or related field in the private sector or not-for-profit organisation
  • A good understanding of health policy, health systems and the patient advocacy landscape in Europe
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal and written) to (co)develop and convey strategies, policies and action plans
  • High degree of strategic thinking, decision-making and tactical skills to develop policy options and recommendations to address brand and patient issues
  • Proven ability to coordinate internally within an organisation and externally with stakeholders to develop advocacy campaigns and drive projects to completion
  • Ability to successfully develop and nurture strong working relationships with cross-functional colleagues and with external stakeholders (patient groups, politicians, healthcare professional groups/medical societies, etc.)
  • Curiosity, collaborative spirit, empathy, and penchant for problem-solving
  • Based in the UK or France; willingness to travel domestically and internationally about 30-40% of the time; and attend out of hours activities and events, including weekends and evenings on occasion
  • Fluency in English and in French (spoken and written); a good command of German is considered a plus
