Associate Director of Cost Accounting

Based in Cambridge MA, this global position is designed for an experienced strong team contributor to lead the implementation and establishment of internal and external cost accounting for manufacturing, including leadership, oversight, critical thinking, process evaluation and improvement of our costing and inventory capabilities. The position will be responsible for the implementation of the company’s systems, processes, policies and internal controls for the operations with CMO’s and internal process manufacturing with the ongoing build of our manufacturing facility located in North Carolina. The role will take on interesting and challenging responsibilities and projects as our organization continues to grow in both size and complexity, and will serve a critical role as business partner to the Supply Chain organization. This role will report to the Director of Accounting. The ideal candidate for this role aspires to grow with the company, is willing to provide support in all areas of costing and inventory.


Establish Costing Methods and Policy:

  • Define our global CMO and Internal manufacturing finance controls and processes with an eye towards continuous improvements
  • Establish cost accounting policy, including proper accounting treatment of process manufacturing activities, excess and obsolescence reserves and determination of costing method (standard, job or moving average)
  • Review of all cost structures to actual costs for inaccuracies including variance analysis and treatment of variances
  • Develop bills of material for accuracy and completeness
  • Drive the development of cost pools and the absorption of these costs into capitalized inventory
  • Support technical accounting with embedded lease considerations at CMO facilities, batch assessment and other accounting judgments

Implement Costing System:

  • Lead implementation of a costing system to appropriately record keep and support the launch of approved drug products
  • Implement and oversee physical inventory observations and cycle count programs
  • Support the implementation of an efforts-based tracking system to identify work activities performed and appropriately determine if capitalizable
  • Engage various stakeholders to ensure system set-up will meet operational needs of Supply Chain and Patient Operations as well as align with financial reporting requirements

Reporting and Operations:

  • Develop inventory and COGs dashboard reporting capabilities for management reporting
  • Maintain Bill of Materials (BOM’s) and validate accuracy
  • Perform month end tasks associated with inventory, material costs, margin analysis and plant financial analysis including preparing adjusting entries, summary schedules and account reconciliations
  • Answer accounting and financial inquiries, researching and interpreting data as necessary
  • Accountable for the ongoing analysis of inventory, production costs, margin and tracing costs back to underlying activities
  • Primary point of contact for audit coordination and deliverables related to inventory and costing

Business Partnering:

  • Establish and maintain strong cross functional partnerships with PharmSci manufacturing team, plant operations, FP&A, financial reporting and other global finance teams
  • Support forecasting assumptions used in annual operating plan and strategic plans for costing and capital planning associated with manufacturing activities
  • Build job and bluebird inventory manufacturing specific knowledge by engaging various internal stakeholders, networking and professional development activities

Position Requirements and Personal Skills:

  • Bachelor’s in Accounting or related degree required
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience in cost accounting or related manufacturing field is necessary
  • Experience in a Pharma/Biotech and global manufacturing a strong plus
  • Technology proficient, knowledge of Oracle and report building a strong plus
  • Must possess excellent work habits and a strong sense of accountability
  • Experience leading projects and implementing change
  • Strong ability to problem solve and maintain change agility with evolving priorities
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required, able to effectively cater message to intended audience
  • Hands on personality, attention to detail and active team member within a global finance team
  • Well organized and process minded
