Associate Director, Communications, Europe

Join bluebird bio’s growing European team as Associate Director Communications, Europe, and contribute to bluebird’s mission to bring gene therapies to patients with severe genetic and rare diseases. Europe is bluebird’s first launch market and we are looking for an experienced, collaborative and enthusiastic team member to support our communications objectives in Europe.

You will play a key role in planning and managing corporate positioning and product communications strategies and activities in support of bluebird bio’s corporate brand and gene therapy platforms in Europe, in Italy, Germany, UK and France in particular. Reporting to the Head of European Public Affairs and to the Head of Global Product Communications, you will work closely with colleagues in Europe and in Global across all relevant functions including: Government Affairs & Public Policy, Market Access, R&D, Commercial/Operations, Medical Affairs, and Patient Advocacy.

About the Role:

  • Support the development and implementation of corporate positioning and product communication plans at EU wide and country level
  • Raise the profile and visibility of bluebird bio in Europe and position bluebird as a leader, and over time, thought leadership in gene therapy (corporate positioning and reputation management)
  • Develop creative communication programmes for the company’s gene therapy products across our disease areas (transfusion dependent β-thalassemia (TDT), cerebral Adrenoleukodystrophy (CALD)) and future pipeline
  • Drive communication strategies and activities in support of the company’s issues, corporate and regulatory milestones, data disclosures and launch preparation efforts
  • Identify and drive opportunities for policy/issue communications in support of gene therapy adoption
  • Identify, prepare and manage issues, as necessary
  • Work collaboratively across functions to ensure alignment with bluebird’s wider Public Affairs objectives and overall business strategy for Europe, including Government Affairs & Public Policy, Patient Advocacy, Medical, Regulatory, Market Access, Commercial, and others
  • Prioritise and drive the key milestones, stories and issues that will help support and evolve bluebird bio’s corporate image and gene therapy platform in Europe among all relevant external audiences including media, policy leaders, payers, patient organisations, investors, industry peers and potential partners
  • Serve as media contact and build and maintain relationships with key media across Europe
  • Develop and oversee the development of key messages, presentations and both internal and external materials that clearly communicate bluebird’s longer-term strategy and corporate and product milestones in Europe; Ensure alignment with appropriate functions
  • Act as a source of strategic counsel and represent Europe’s communications priorities internally
  • Work closely with bluebird’s designated Communications agency in Europe and be accountable for deliverables; manage associated budgets
  • Closely monitor and act on industry and communication trends relevant to bluebird bio

About You:

  • BA/MA degree and 10+ years of integrated public affairs and communications experience in the biotech, healthcare or food and consumer goods sector
  • The ideal candidate should have both corporate and product communications experience
    • Experience in driving corporate awareness, media relations, company positioning and transformation initiatives in an external operating environment
    • Experience in product launches in Europe, including disease awareness and patient education/engagement programmes
  • Excellent understanding of healthcare communications, health policy and health systems in Europe and of the role of communications in the policy process
  • High awareness of country codes of conduct (ABPI, other) and alignment to them
  • Outstanding communication and presentation skills, both written and verbal. Includes strong storytelling and editorial skills. Highly effective at distilling complex content into clear, concise and engaging communications
  • Preferably based in Zug, Switzerland; willingness to travel (Europe/internationally) about 40% of the time
  • Smart, business-savvy individual who is also passionate about science
  • Highly skilled in account management including planning, prioritization, objective setting, plan execution (external and internal); experience managing external agencies
  • Strong financial/budget management skills
  • Sees him/herself as an integral part of Public Affairs in Europe, Global Communications and of a cross-functional team
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written); a good command of French and German is considered a plus
