Sr. Manager, Scientific Communications, Gene Therapy, Hemoglobinopathies

bluebird bio, a pioneer in lentiviral vector-based gene therapies and cellular immunotherapies, is seeking a dynamic, versatile professional to join its growing Medical Affairs team. At bluebird we are committed to using cutting-edge science to make a real difference for patients with serious rare and genetic disease. bluebird is conducting clinical studies with two autologous hematopoietic stem cell gene therapies: LentiGlobin BB305 for transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia (TDT) and severe sickle cell disease (SCD) and Lenti-D for cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy. These therapies have the potential to offer transformative new options to patients. The LentiGlobin and Lenti-D clinical programs are preparing for commercialization and the Manager, Scientific Communication, Hemoglobinopathies will play a critical role in launch preparation and execution. Gene therapy is a ground-breaking field and Medical Affairs is central to commercialization efforts, with critical roles in education and care delivery.

 

As a key member of the Scientific Communication and Medical Operations (SCMO) team, the Sr. Manager, Sci Comm will contribute to the development and execution of a broad range of content for publications, training, medical information, field medical, and external educational programs across TDT and SCD. This individual will report to the Director, Scientific Communication and Medical Education, Hemoglobinopathies.

Key Activities

Execute hemoglobinopathies scientific communications and education deliverables and contribute to the development of the Medical Strategic Plan and Strategic Integrated Product Plan for LentiGlobin in TDT and SCD

  • Develop high-visibility scientific abstracts, slide decks, posters, presentations and manuscripts to share ground-breaking new clinical data and real-world evidence
    • Liaise with clinical development, clinical operations, data management and statistics teams to gather data and plan publication development timelines
  • Develop clinical and medical educational materials in hemoglobinopathies and gene therapy, including core slide decks, literature summaries and white papers
  • Support content development for advisory boards, symposia, and non-CME educational efforts
  • Participate in data analysis and communication planning for TDT standard of care evidence generation
  • Develop internal training and medical information materials such as strategic medical briefs, Q&As, and non-standard responses
  • Update and maintain the transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia Scientific Platform
  • Execute key tactics for medical congresses, including medical affairs booth educational content development, symposia planning, and vendor management
  • Prepare scientific communication documents for formal review and approval and manage hemoglobinopathies medical document repository

 

Requirements

  • 4+ years in a biotechnology/pharmaceutical or medical research environment required
  • Advanced degree in a relevant field required; PhD or PharmD preferred
  • A combination of scientific publication and cross-functional scientific and medical communication experience
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with strong attention to detail and high level of accuracy; experience in scientific writing and publication planning highly desirable
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with ability to coordinate and lead multiple projects simultaneously
  • Ability to critically appraise medical/scientific literature
  • Ability to travel for scientific congress meetings as necessary (<20%)
  • Ability to work individually, within a multi-disciplinary team, as well as with external partners and vendors in a fast-paced environment
