Lentiviral Vectors

bluebird bio is developing potentially transformative, one-time gene therapies for severe genetic and orphan diseases. At the heart of bluebird bio’s product creation efforts is its broadly applicable gene therapy platform for the development of new treatments for diseases with few or no clinical options. bluebird bio has two clinical stage product candidates in development, one for childhood cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy (CCALD) and one for beta-thalassemia major/sickle cell disease, and an early stage oncology program in partnership with Celgene Corporation.

Join bluebird bio’s enthusiastic and collaborative team by contributing to the overall success of our novel gene therapy approach.  This is a hands on position, focusing on helping the lentiviral vector characterization gain further understanding with respect to product quality attributes. The Scientist will be responsible for assay development activities, design of experiments, outsourcing and managing external projects as well as collaborating internally with subject matter experts to gain extensive knowledge about our lentiviral vector products which will ultimately help control its quality and associated manufacturing processes.

About the position:

  • Support the design of a scientific strategy for characterizing lentiviral vectors
  • Develop innovative analytical technologies for characterizing lentiviral vectors and ensure manufacturing consistency
  • Develop experimental plans, interpret scientific results, provide statistical analysis where appropriate, summarize and present scientific data and report progress on behalf of the team
  • This is a hands-on position requiring the execution of laboratory experiments
  • Generate, manage, evaluate, and maintain critical data in a highly organized manner
  • Write and review technical documentation (protocols and reports, SOPs, regulatory submissions, etc.)
  • Represent the vector characterization team in cross-functional team meetings
  • Must be willing to have a flexible schedule based on experimental and company needs (including possible weekend work)

About you:

    • PhD in biochemistry or other related biological sciences with 0 ‐ 2 years of relevant experience, or MS with 6+ years of experience, or BS with 8+ years of experience
    • Demonstrate a strong skill set and knowledge in analytical assay development (i.e. HPLC, ELISA, qPCR, cell-based assays, gel electrophoresis, flow cytometry, etc...)
    • Experience with analytical techniques and separation technologies for viral-based products is highly desirable
    • Must have experience developing, qualifying and troubleshooting analytical assays
    • Experience with assay validation, release and characterization testing is highly desirable
    • Excellent skills in Microsoft word, Excel and statistical data analysis
    • Excellent command of scientific fundamentals to translate into laboratory work and advanced testing techniques; strong experience qualifying assays
    • Superb communications-both written and oral skills and "do-what-it-takes" attitude
    • Track record of completing deliverables within specified timelines
    • Independently motivated, detail oriented, with good problem solving ability
    • Must be able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
    • Be ready to embrace the principles of the bluebird bio culture: b colorful, b cooperative, and b yourself
