bluebird bio is developing potentially transformative, one-time gene therapies for severe genetic and orphan diseases. At the heart of bluebird bio’s product creation efforts is its broadly applicable gene therapy platform for the development of new treatments for diseases with few or no clinical options. bluebird bio has two clinical stage product candidates in development, one for childhood cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy (CCALD) and one for beta-thalassemia major/sickle cell disease, and an early stage oncology program in partnership with Celgene Corporation.

Join bluebird bio’s enthusiastic and collaborative team by contributing to the overall success of our novel gene therapy approach.  The focus of this position is to provide support for the characterization of lentiviral vector. We are looking for an innovative scientist with the breadth of experience and drive to implement our vision for this function.

About the position:

  • Develop analytical assays and execute key experiments to support lentiviral vector biochemical and biophysical characterization, including the development of cell based potency assays.
  • Support assay qualification and development activities and interact with CMOs and other vendors, as needed.
  • Participate in general lab maintenance, including maintaining key bioprocessing equipment.
  • Participate in writing/ reviewing analytical development and characterization plans and protocols, analyzing critical data and managing experimental timelines in a highly organized manner to meet corporate goals.
  • Assist in the generation, review and approval of technical reports and prepare scientific presentations, as needed.
  • Maintain accurate and reliable record-keeping including database management and lab notebook following good documentation practices.

About you:

  • BS/MS in chemical engineering, biochemistry or biological sciences with 5+ years (BS) or 3+ years (MS) of experience in a laboratory environment is required.
  • Hands on experience with development of cell based assays or ELISA or qPCR based assays is required
  • Experience in flow cytometry and working knowledge of FlowJo or equivalent flow cytometry data analysis software experience will be preferred.
  • Experience with qualifying assays and an understanding of ICH/ FDA guidelines will be preferred.
  • Experience working on the analytical development and characterization of either lentiviral vectors, viral based products, or vaccines is a plus
  • Excellent command of scientific fundamentals to translate into laboratory work.
  • Basic understanding and experience with general lab techniques such as gel electrophoresis, protein and nucleic acid quantitation techniques is preferred.
  • Excellent organization skills, sufficient to multi-task in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities. Must be able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Understanding of statistical concepts, such as DoE, Prism etc. will be a plus.
  • Superb communications—both written and oral skills and “do-what-it-takes” attitude.
  • Independently motivated, detail oriented and good problem solving ability.
  • Must be willing to have a flexible schedule based on experimental and company needs
