Director, EU Patient Operations


About the role:

  • This role will be responsible for establishing the operational foundation for bluebird Europe.
  • Centers-of-Excellence: Working with Global team to establish, onboard, and develop new gene therapy center-of-excellence (COE) in the key EU 4 countries – Germany, UK, France, and Italy
    • Lead contracting of COEs
      • Partner with Global team to finalize selection of 8-10 COEs in the EU 4
      • Partner in contract negotiation process to execute COE partnership agreements with the centers of excellence in collaboration with Commercial Operations and global COE lead
      • Be the Patient Operations primary point of contact for the apheresis collection center activity (collection of patient’s cells – starting material to manufacturing process) which is the initial touchpoint for the COE
    • Execute operational testing (with Global team)
      • Pressure test processes for patient and product flow
      • Partner with Commercial Operations to establish an effective manufacturing system relationship while ensuring seamless customer (hospital stakeholders and patient) experience.
      • Input into bluebird staffing model to support EU Pharm Sciences build- COE support roles, Nurse Educators, supply chain, etc.
    • Lead the effort to onboard and train COEs from a patient operations perspective
    • Manage expansion of COEs as necessary to satisfy patient demand – either more COEs in country or addition of other countries
    • Support operational program development to support Middle East North Africa (MENA) patient access to EU COEs
  • Patient Operations infrastructure in Europe: In collaboration with the Global team, develop a right-sized in market operating model to:
    • Develop systems and process to enable effective real time scheduling of patients
    • Implement IT solutions to help effectively track patients progress through the treatment pathway
    • Real time support of patients and physicians through the patient treatment pathway
    • Identify risks and drive continuous improvement in alignment with regulatory and commercial manufacturing requirements.
    • Actively engage in the identification, sharing, and adaptation of best practices cross-functionally and between COE sites.
    • Establish a World Class client relations function that delivers outstanding tailored support for patients and providers.
  • Develop and lead operational analytics and business process
    • Establish and manage key business metrics and organizational health assessment
    • Establish and lead EU patient operations business planning process
    • Partner with Commercial Ops function to develop, implement, and execute necessary business management process (revenue recognition, transparency reporting, etc.)
  • Support operational and strategic projects as needed that could include
    • Ensure effective communication channels both internally and externally
    • Support EU business unit in country team design and recruitment
    • Support EU business unit to establish and nurture bbb culture across Europe
    • Process development and manage operational elements of Cross-border patient referral from smaller EU countries to EU 4 COEs
    • Development of pan EU commercialization strategy (beyond EU4)

About you:

  • 15+ years of work experience
  • Management experience in Supply Chain or Manufacturing Operations
  • Fluent in English + 1 other language (Spanish, Italian, French or German)
  • Advanced degree preferred – MBA, PhD
  • Up to 30% of travel required
  • Business to business negotiation and management
  • Complex cross functional project management experience
  • Proven track-record of successfully integrating activities and perspectives across functions
  • Ability and track record of successfully managing biologics programs through late-stage clinical development to commercial is required
  • Experience leading a client relations/customer service team
  • Product launch experience
  • Outstanding communication, analytical and organizational skills
  • Highly collaborative team player who fosters open communication and facilitates mutual understanding between all stakeholders
