Senior Accountant, Equity Accounting & Administration

bluebird bio is developing potentially transformative, one-time gene therapies for severe genetic and orphan diseases. At the heart of bluebird bio’s product creation efforts is its broadly applicable gene therapy platform for the development of new treatments for diseases with few or no clinical options. bluebird bio has multiple clinical stage product candidates in development, one for childhood cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy (CCALD) and one for beta-thalassemia major/sickle cell disease, and an early stage oncology program in partnership with Celgene Corporation.

This position is designed for a strong team contributor and leader to provide oversight, critical thinking, process evaluation and improvement on our accounting and reporting team. The position will be responsible for accounting for all equity transactions, including stock-based compensation transactions (options, RSUs, our ESPP and 10b5-1 plan transactions), preparing equity-related disclosures for our SEC filings, and overseeing the administration of our plans in the U.S. and Europe, as well as reviewing payroll on a biweekly basis. The role will take on interesting and challenging responsibilities as our organization continues to grow in both size and complexity, and will serve a critical role as a business partner to the organization. This role will report to the Sr. Manager, External Reporting & Compliance. The ideal candidate for this role aspires to grow with the company and is willing to provide support in all areas of the business.

About the role:

  • Record all equity-related journal entries in the GL
  • Review new equity grants and upload into the stock option administration system, Solium ShareWorks; ensure ShareWorks is updated for exercises, cancellations, and other stock option activity
  • Monitor restricted stock units vesting/release schedules and coordinate with Solium on selling to cover for taxes
  • Administer ESPP purchases, track activity during open enrollment periods, and monitor and communicate contribution changes to Payroll at the beginning and during each offering
  • Monitor equity activity at our transfer agent on a weekly basis
  • Review 10b5-1 plans and daily transactions, including ensuring that taxes are correctly calculated
  • Collect and remit funds resulting from cash option exercises
  • Update stock-based compensation assumptions to calculate Black-Scholes Values of awards
  • Perform monthly close activities including reconciliations of option proceeds receivable and employee withholding tax payable, reconciling our transfer agent records to our own, recording stock-based compensation expense, etc.
  • Reconcile quarterly grant activity to Board, Compensation Committee, and CEO written consents
  • Prepare equity, stock option and RSU rollforwards and other required disclosures for SEC reporting
  • Review bi-weekly payroll
  • Provide customer service to employees of all levels on equity-related matters, including troubleshooting of issues
  • Assist with quarterly review and annual audit preparation for our auditors, helping to ensure that high-quality financial information is created
  • Assist with ad hoc projects as necessary and performs any other job duties as assigned.

 About you:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting
  • Previous experience with equity administration required
  • CPA, with previous public accounting experience a plus
  • 4-6 years of experience in an accounting role, with biotech industry experience preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of accounting principles
  • Independently motivated, detail-oriented and good problem solving ability
  • Ability to execute and follow-through to completion and documentation.
  • Excellent organizational skills, sufficient to multi-task in an extremely fast-paced environment with changing priorities.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and provide a high level of service to internal and external customers at all levels within the company
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment where results are achieved through influence and the incorporation of multiple points of view
  • Experience with the following systems a plus: Oracle HRIS, Solium ShareWorks, ADP WorkForceNow
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to influence across multiple functions.
