Join bluebird bio’s enthusiastic and collaborative team and contribute to the overall success of our novel gene therapy approaches.  bluebird bio seeks an Associate Manager, Instrumentation & Controls for our new manufacturing facility in North Carolina’s Research Triangle. You will have responsibilities for managing the delivery of instrumentation and calibration services as required to ensure systems are designed and maintained according to the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance. This role will support the overall facilities operations and services. This individual will work with closely with cross-functional bluebird team, including Quality Assurance, Quality Control, Facilities, Manufacturing Sciences & Technology and Process Development.

About the role:

The Associate Manager, Instrumentation and Controls will take full ownership for site instrumentation design and operations.  This role will be integral in the design of all automation and instrumentation platforms by acting as the subject matter expert (SME) for instrumentation design and specification.  They will direct, coordinate and control the scheduled and routine calibrations executed on site. The role works closely with the IT, Automation, Facilities, Quality and Manufacturing groups to ensure all technical aspects of the site instrumentation requirements are understood, designed and maintained.

About you:

  • Knowledge of electronic, HVAC, and instrumentation theory and practice including materials, diagrams and methods used in the installation, maintenance and repair of electric and electronic control devices.
  • Knowledge of leadership techniques, principles and procedures to assign work, schedule, supervise, train, and evaluate the work of assigned staff.
  • Provide technical advice during troubleshooting and corrective action of instrument breakdown or failures to find the root cause and best solution in order to restore the functionality back to normal.
  • Interpret control and P&ID drawings assisting in specification of appropriate instrumentation.
  • Review instrumentation, control and electrical designs.
  • Identify, study, propose, and implement area for improvement in the field of instrumentation engineering to enhance operation and improve total equipment reliability.
  • Supervise calibration and instrumentation work execution on site, develop procedures and instruction for either maintenance, shutdown or project to ensure compliance to safety, specification, standard and procedures in order to achieve highest quality of the work.
  • Participate and represent calibration planning and scheduling function in daily and weekly planning meetings with production and operations representatives.
  • Reviews and approves calibration events for accuracy and GMP compliance.
  • Populate inputs into Computerized Materials and Maintenance Management System (CMMMS) to ensure data and history of equipment maintenance activities are captured accurately. Provide inputs to maintenance planner with regards to instrument maintenance activities
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and an ability to think outside the box are essential
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent from an accredited university or college
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in Instrumentation and Controls in a GMP manufacturing facility.
  • Minimum of 5 years managing personnel
  • Must have strong computer/database management skills, including ability to create and manage complex spreadsheets.
  • Must be proficient using computers & software programs such as various CMMS and Microsoft Products (Excel, Outlook, Sharepoint, Visio, etc.)
  • Must have the ability to effectively prioritize tasks that align to changing business needs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
