The newly created role of Senior Manager/Associate Director of Business Development will be responsible for participating in and/or leading the full range of bluebird’s business development activities including search and evaluation, diligence, and negotiation across a range transaction types.  For each project, this individual will work closely with the Business and Corporate Development team and with cross functional representatives throughout the organization to analyze and evaluate strategic fit, scientific/medical merit, commercial case, and opportunity value. As appropriate, the Associate Director will represent bluebird in deal negotiations with partners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead efforts to assess the scientific and commercial attractiveness of emerging licensing and M&A opportunities under the direction of the Business Development leadership team
  • Provide analytical support by creating and updating valuation models of potential transactions, executing scenario analyses, and evaluating alternative deal constructs
  • Coordinate with internal stakeholders (e.g., legal, commercial, research, medical, finance, etc.) to deliver an integrated view of the potential value represented by each Business Development opportunity
  • Conduct in-depth analyses of all aspects of potential transactions, to identify issues and propose creative solutions, and to craft internal and external presentations to support Business Development initiatives
  • Ensure market research and competitive landscape analyses are conducted related to potential Business Development opportunities
  • As appropriate, lead deal negotiations in coordination with legal and other bluebird stakeholders
  • Contribute to opportunity tracking to ensure that projects meet key deadlines and milestones, both pre- and post-transaction
  • Represent BD as appropriate as a member of bluebird’s cross-functional teams            




  • 4-6 years of experience in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry is required
  • 2+ years’ experience in a broad business development role evaluating innovative assets/technologies in various stages of development (discovery, pre-clinical, clinical, approval, launch)
  • Broad exposure to drug research, development, and commercialization activities in the US as well as abroad is required
  • Prior work in cell and gene therapy is a plus
  • Ability to facilitate resolution of complex business questions including fundamentals of financial valuation and structured decision making
  • Excellent interpersonal, networking and communication skills. Highly effective at leading by influence in a matrixed environment
  • A general understanding of intellectual property considerations
  • Strong writing , speaking, and interpersonal skills, as well as creativity in applying analytical frameworks to business issues, are a must
  • Self-starter with a strong work ethic and ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously
  • Ability and willingness to work in a hands -on, collaborative fashion with a variety of disciplines both inside and outside of the company
  • Must be a creative, out-of-the-box thinker with willingness to adapt
  • Must be a team player and able to earn the trust and respect of executives, scientists, clinicians, administrators, investors, and collaborators while driving the initiatives
  • Must be able to listen effectively and invite response and discussion
  • Must be a collaborator who communicates in an open, clear, complete, timely and consistent manner
